Welcome to the Yarram Courthouse Gallery

The Courthouse Gallery is a community art space run by volunteers of the Courthouse Gallery and staff and clients of Mirridong Services Inc. It is located in the renovated Courthouse, a well-known historic building in the main street of Yarram.

The Courthouse is an art gallery where local and regional artists can display their work raising the profile of the artists in our community. We have regular exhibitions of visual and creative arts.

The gallery offers various amenities for exhibitions. The exhibition space includes professional tract lighting, a security system and moveable walls and plinths allowing for various display options.

The gallery, open every day except Wednesday, shares the building with the local Information/Tourist services and a gift shop, both of which bring in a flow of visitors. The building includes toilet facilities and a kitchen area to facilitate exhibition openings. Gallery members work with exhibitors to provide assistance in arranging exhibitions.

We invite you to schedule an exhibition of your work with us at the Courthouse Gallery.

Bookings will be accepted up to 12 months in advance.

"Wonders in Wood" - An exhibition of artworks in wood from the State Craft Collection

"Bush Landscapes" - June 9th to July 5th

"Bush Landscapes" is a delightful selection of paintings from the Alberton Collection depicting the artists' love of the bush.

These works won awards at the Yarram Apex Art Show over a thirty year period and were acquired by the Apex Club. Its vision was that paintings should be on permanent display in public buildings in Yarram. The Wellington Shire now archive the collection.

Artists represented include Barry Alford, Marilyn Close, Irene Cox, Julie Lungdren-Coulter, Lorraine Mumford and Judith Walsh

Come and view for the first time or re-visit. The exhibition runs to Tuesday July the 5th.

"........but I know what I like!" opening night Friday 13th 2011

It was a small but brave crowd who came out on a cold and wet night to enjoy a glass of wine and enjoy the works on display at the new exhibition. The idea for the exhibition "......but I know what I like!" came from the expression "I may not know much about art but I know what I like". It gave gallery members a chance to exhibit favourite works of art that they own. Where normally this art would be appreciated by a few it can take on a new feeling and be appreciated by many in this setting.

The exhibiting members were asked to explain some background to the art and artist, and why the work was important to them. The member who's painting appears below (artist Suzette Levette) wrote that, "I am friends with the artist and I enjoy having some of her personality injected into my private space". Another interesting piece is a small bronze statue of a robed women titled "Mabel". The owner of this piece wrote, "We found "Mabel" on a rubbish tip in New Zealand in 1960 and since then she has travelled twice around the world with us".

The exhibition is running until the 7th of June, with the gallery open 10-4pm everyday closed on Wednesday.

Where Are They Now?

Yarram ex-students come back to show their current art at the Yarram Courthouse Gallery.
Featuring works by:
Printmaker Jenny Petersen, ceramicist Margaret Booth, painters Peter Gilliland, Trudy Joyce and Naomi Sylvester, textile artist Helen Joyce and glass maker Robert Wynne. The exhibition runs from the 21st of April to the 10th of May.

The following photos are of the opening night. It was great to catch up with old teachers and meet new artists that had grown up in the area.

"The Felt Connection" - Paintings in Felt & Wearable Art

Pam Booth and Leonie Thomas are artists who predominately work with textiles. They have both studied in the field of visual arts and over the past few years have broadened their line of work by implementing and exploring the versatility of felt.

Leonie and Pam work collaboratively in producing individual pieces of wearable art as well as wall hangings and canvases. As artists they work intuitively, together and enjoy the creative interaction and problem solving which is a result of the sharing of ideas. Both like to push their personal boundaries by experimenting with a wide range of resources whilst exploring diverse styles and techniques. Felt is the basic material used. As their favourite tool is their hands, they find great challenge in the multi dimensional possibilities of felt. Their work is predominately concerned with developing a visual and tactile representation of the human face and figure.

Recently they have been working to create diverse textural effects through the process of building layers of different materials such as wool tops, woollen bats, silk and cotton. With the addition of acrylic paints, dyes (organic, tannic rust, commercial) and embroidery, the work becomes more intricate and unites or connects to create the final composition. They search for symmetry and rhythm to give their work balance and harmony.

Pam and Leonie collaborate and draw inspiration from the human face, form and other natural forms. Some of their art works have evolved from a recent trip to Central Australia. The unique Central Australian landscape has encouraged further exploration of colour, pattern and texture and the interconnection with the human form and figure.

They seek to “challenge” the different fibres and to explore their potential as well as observe the connections made with the materials and the other media in order to produce an individual work of art.

They find the process of transforming wool into felt a magical experience that can surprise and delight as final outcomes of work can sometimes be unexpected but thoroughly exciting!

This exciting exhibition will show from March 24th to April 19th. The gallery is open 10.00- 4.00 daily except Wednesday. The official opening will be held on Saturday March the 26th from 6 - 8pm.

Exhibition for January 2011 "Baringa - A Special Place"

The latest works from two exciting artists will be on show in Yarram Courthouse Gallery opening this week.
Lyndie Jackson’s indigenous paintings and Lyn Whelan’s dramatic ceramics. Lyndie is from Yarram and Lyn hails from Inverloch but as the secretary of the Alberton Football Association has close links with the district.
Their work is distinctly different but also has many areas of complement-both artists use the dramatic contrast of black and white in their works. Both are skilful at drawing simple, bold outlines to great effect. The wonderful bright colours that Lyn uses also stand out dramatically against the black and white in Lyndie’s paintings.

Lynn Whelan is a ceramic artist with a flair for bold colours and striking designs. She creates a wide range of ceramics, from decorative to functional. She is showing a range of vases, plates, clocks, canisters, planters & bowls. Her work has been in demand by Shire councils & sporting groups for decorating commemorative tiles & trophies. She is gaining recognition for her unique patterns and colour co-ordination. Former training as an architectural draftswoman led her to explore detailed and intricate patterns, featuring many timeless black and white designs as well as striking colours to offset meticulously planned designs. Her unique designs are well sought after and are held in collections Australia-wide and internationally.

Lyndie Jackson’s unique indigenous designs and dot form of painting is her legacy from her ancestors from Tasmania. She has been painting for eighteen years selling privately and has exhibited in Melbourne at the National Gallery of Victoria, Western Port and Rotary Art shows in Yarram. Before moving to Yarram eight years ago she exhibited in & ran a gallery for fellow indigenous artists in Mornington. Lyndie’s paintings portray the marine world and she continues this artistic role passed to her from her Tasmanian indigenous Grandmother. Lyndie’s work is distinctive as it mostly done in black and white. Her work shows a strong sense of pattern depicting dolphin, starfish, fish, shells & other marine life. The figures are linked often with dot painted sections creating a unity in the work. Her work shows a reverence for these living sea creatures and it has a freshness achieved by the use of strong lines, pared down outlines & dot technique. The contrast of the shapes is emphasised by the use of black and white. She studied Koori art & design for two years after receiving confirmation of her indigenous background. The Tasmanian Aboriginal Association has been her mentor providing guidance to what symbols she is allowed to paint. Whilst all her works have a particular traditional meaning and narrative, colours & shapes also have significance, for example the colour silver represents the salt of the sea, circles may signify camp-fire places . Lyndie recalled the impact of taking up painting “I felt for the first time that I belonged.”

We are privileged to be able to view this combined exhibition showcasing two exciting artists.
